Cruise with the passenger steamer Diesbar

Steam navigation for passenger transport on the River Elbe can look back over
a history of more than 170 years. It was on 8 July 1836, that twelve Dresden citizens received a royal privilege for steam navigation within the borders of Saxony. Shortly afterwards, the "Elbdampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft" was founded.

The Dresden fleet was thus preserved as the oldest and largest paddle-steamer fleet in the world.

The Elbe between Seusslitz near Meissen and Decin in the Czech Republic is not just one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe - the stretch of the Elbe valley through Dresden has also been designated UNESCO world heritage since 2004.

Highlights

Special city tour
with
an assistance of an English speaking guide.

The historical centre of Dresden is located on the left bank of the Elbe, at the peak of a graceful river bend. Protected for centuries by mighty fortifications, the Saxon capital developed splendour and activity.

Zwinger - Built 1710-28 by
the architect Pöppelmann in cooperation with the sculptor Permoser. Originally designed as an orangery and a setting for court festivities, it was later used for exhibitions. Most perfect example of Late Baroque architecture in Germany. Construction of the Semper Gallery 1847-55.

Semper Oper - Built 1838-41 by Gottfried Semper. Gutted by fire in 1869. Rebuilt 1871-78 in High Renaissance style according to Semper´s plans by his son Manfred. The house was completely destroyed in 1945 and reopened in 1985 after extensive reconstruction. It is the only theater in Germany that bears the name of its architect.

Royal palace - First mention of a castle some 700 years ago. A palace comprising four wings was built in the late 15th century. Renaissance-style enlargement 1548-56. Destroyed by fire in 1701
and rebuilt under Augustus the Strong. Large-scale alterations in Neo-Renaissance style 1889-1901 to mark the 800th anniversary of the Wettin dynasty. Destroyed in 1945. Reconstruction as a museum complex commenced in 1989 and still in progress.

Frauenkirche - The Frauenkirche was erected between 1726 and 1743, following the designs
of George Bähr.
Its characteristic dome, called the "stone bell" owing to its shape, collapsed on February 15th, 1945 under the rain of bombs. The Neumarkt quarter around the church is also to regain its status as the historical heart of the city.
The majority of the Baroque townhouses - in combination with modern buildings - are to be completed in time for the city`s 800-year jubilee in 2006.
